The first attempt at uploading Mozilla Archive Format on the Web Translation System failed.
I'm waiting for a reply to the following help requests before deciding on how to proceed:
* Missing localized strings from previous translations
* End-of-line (\u000D\u000A) not encoded in downloaded .properties files

If anyone is interested in performing a translation by hand in the meantime, MAF 0.8.4 is
currently available for download from the WTS; you can send your translations to the MAF
mailing list or directly to me using the information provided on http://maf.mozdev.org.

Hello!

Mozilla Archive Format 0.8.5wts is now correctly uploaded on the Web Translation System.

All the strings that were translated previously, outside of the WTS, are now available.


Merge of the independently started translations

The French and Polish translations started before the old strings were visible. I merged the new work with the old one. I kept the new translations, while retaining the old access keys.

You can find, attached to this post, an archive file containing, for each of the changed files, both the original version distributed with MAF and the current one. The files are ready to be compared if needed.


Additional translation notes

In fileFiltersObject.properties:

• opendialog.filters.webarchives: This string is shown in the "open" dialog of Firefox. Its text resembles that of the other open filters.
• savedialog.filters.maff: The Web Archive expression is a familiar terminology for Internet Explorer users. They usually select a similar entry in IE's save dialog in order to save a page in a single file.

In prefsDialog.properties:

• associate.*.sysfiletypedesc: These strings are displayed in Windows Explorer as a file type description. For example, Firefox MAFF Document resembles the Firefox HTML Document built-in Firefox string.

Glad that everything is sorted now!

French locale (fr-FR) updated and tested. It works fine!

Thanks! I had a look at the French topic, and that suggested me an additional translation note. I'm writing it here for general reference.

In maf.dtd:

• maf.browseOpenArchivesDialog.btnopentabsusingprotocol: The jar: expression is a technical protocol name and as such it is invariant in all languages. The final colon is part of the protocol name, and no space should be added before it.

Danish updated & released.

It seems that the original translation somewhere along the line was converted (incorrectly) to ASCII and back, as all danish chars in the old translation were garbled. Should be fixed now.

I had understood it correctly and I wasn't going to add a space (finally I used quotes to emphasize this). But it's well that you clarify it.


I have a comment about the openmafarchivewindowtitle and savemafarchivewindowtitle strings in maf.properties.
If I understand it correctly, MAF is used for the extension's name and MAFF for the files. In these two strings you use "MAF Archive" with a single F. Is it a typo ? In prefsDialog.dtd you use "MAFF archive" with two F's...

Yes, my translation note was just confirming what you did, since you didn't add the space in the first place. Anyway, using quotes is a good idea, and I'll use them when creating new English strings including protocol names.



Yes, MAF is the extension and MAFF is the file type. In the two strings you mentioned, "MAF Archive" means "archive managed by MAF" (both MAFF and MHTML), so using only one 'F' is correct. Perhaps I'll redesign these open and save dialogs sometime in the future; in this case, something like "Open web archive" seems a more appropriate window title to me.

In prefsDialog.dtd:

• save.component.savecomplete.label: "Save Complete" is a Firefox add-on now integrated with MAF. Its proper name usually remains the same in other languages.

Additional translation notes for MAF 0.10.0wts

In mafCommandsOverlay.dtd:

• command.browseopenarchives.key, command.browseopenarchives.modifiers: These entries control shortcut keys, and should not be modified unless the shortcut conflicts with a standard Firefox key in your language.
• The rest of the file contains the labels and the access keys of menu items. The same item may appear in different menus. The English access keys have been chosen to remain consistent across all menus, while avoiding conflicts with existing standard Firefox menu items.

About mafMultipleTabOverlay.dtd:

• You need the "Multiple Tab Handler" extension to test messages in this file.

Additional translation notes for MAF 0.11.1wts

In saveCompletePersistObject.properties:

• "Save Complete" is the proper name of a Firefox extension, and usually remains the same in other languages.
• savecomplete.status.errors.msg: This text appears in a message box when saving a page fails.
• savecomplete.console.warnings.text, savecomplete.console.errors.text: This text appears in the Error Console when saving a page fails. The first %S is the location of the document being saved, while the second %S is replaced with the error messages in English.

I've just uploaded MAF 0.13.0 on the Web Translation System.

Starting from the new strings in this version, the translation notes are written in the "comments" that are shown by the WTS in the yellow lines.

This new version introduces a window that displays information about the open archives. There are 42 new strings to translate (even though the WTS reports two pages of 50 items ), and most of them are very short field names.

Every field name appears twice: once for the column header and once for the corresponding label in the details view. In English, every word in the column header is capitalized, while for labels only the first letter is uppercase. In some languages there is no such difference, however the labels are still followed by a colon.

Polish locale released, but I have some remarks:
- Pay attention that WTS will change in the 'welcomeDialog.dtd' file all brackets to HTML code when you will be download all translation, so welcome screen will be bad displayed formated text. You must change this code to < >.
- Please localize extension description. See https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Localizing...on_descriptions . Use Localizing before Gecko 1.9 method. This method works also with Fx 3 and is better to translation.

I noticed this while testing the locales... In order to release a first package, I did the replacements manually as you did.

Unfortunately this situation doesn't make life easy for translators, who'd have to do the same replacements to be able to test locally. I'll work on a definitive solution, which would probably involve pseudo-tags, since for the WTS there is no way to determine if ">" or "&" should be treated literally or is part of an inline HTML tag or entity. I don't know when I'll be able to come up with a solution.

I worked around the problem that caused the HTML tags like <b> and </b> to appear literally in the translated welcome dialog.

Now the HTML tags have become pseudo-tags like [ b ] and [ /b ]. The details are in the translation notes for welcomeDialog.dtd.

This change should allow all the translators and testers to see how the welcome dialog appears with the proper formatting applied.

French released

I tried to add italics with [ i ] and [ /i ] in options.savecomplete.label, which is the usual recommendation to introduce foreign languages in a french text. Unfortunately it didn't get transformed dans was displayed as [ i ]Savecomplete[ /i ]. Probably only the tags corresponding to the English ones get transformed.

I used quotes instead, which is (slightly) sub-optimal but it is ok for now. Maybe it would be nice for a future version
